The Challenges
Hoyer VMS Group faced a series of strategic hurdles familiar to many technology-driven organisations striving to deliver both operational excellence and environmental responsibility:
Conventional IT replacement cycle:
Devices were replaced automatically when warranties expired, new processor generations launched, or when hardware fell short of evolving security standards. This approach resulted in the frequent procurement of brand-new equipment, reinforcing a linear consumption model.
Conflict with business philosophy:
The existing IT strategy was at odds with Hoyer VMS Group’s commitment to environmental stewardship and cost-effectiveness which is core to their business ethos. The disconnect between product sustainability and IT practices risked undermining Hoyer VMS Group’s company-wide sustainability commitments.
Alignment with ambitious sustainability targets:
IT leadership, recognising this gap, challenged the traditional refresh practices, while seeking methods to extend device lifecycles and reduce environmental impact without compromising performance.
Sector-specific demands:
Any new solution had to be robust: fully compatible with Windows 11 Professional, meeting or exceeding the technical and warranty standards of new devices.
Financial and environmental requirements:
Beyond technical needs, the chosen approach needed to deliver clear cost efficiencies and measurable reductions in carbon emissions, waste, and resource consumption.
Addressing these interconnected challenges was essential for Hoyer VMS Group to integrate sustainability at the heart of their IT operations, directly supporting the broader environmental and economic objectives of the business.
The Process
Initiating the transformation:
Hoyer VMS Group’s journey toward sustainable IT practices began with a proactive step by their IT Manager, who recognised the need to align the company’s technology operations with its broader environmental goals. This led to initiating contact with Comm2iG, Circular Computing’s reseller.
Exploring decarbonisation opportunities:
The initial discussions focused on how remanufactured devices could play a pivotal role in advancing Hoyer’s decarbonisation digital workplace strategy. The IT Manager sought a solution that not only met technical and operational requirements but also delivered measurable environmental benefits.
Engaging with expertise:
To deepen their understanding, Hoyer VMS Group engaged with Martin Lyngfeldt Henriksen, Advisor Sustainable Digital Workplace at Comm2iG. Martin provided valuable insights into the sustainability advantages of Remanufacturing as a Service (RaaS). He highlighted how this model could extend the lifecycle of devices, reduce electronic waste, and significantly lower carbon emissions all while maintaining high performance standards
Cross-departmental collaboration:
The process wasn’t limited to the IT department. Detailed discussions were facilitated across multiple departments, including marketing and human resources, to ensure comprehensive organisational buy-in. This collaborative approach ensured that all stakeholders understood the benefits and implications of adopting remanufactured technology.
Data-driven decision making:
A thorough analysis of environmental impacts and performance metrics was conducted. This data-driven approach helped address any concerns about the reliability and efficiency of remanufactured devices. By demonstrating that these devices could meet or exceed the performance of new equipment, our reseller-built confidence in the proposed solution.
The Solution
Adoption of remanufactured devices:
Hoyer VMS Group adopted the Remanufacturing as a Service (RaaS) model and deployed a fleet of remanufactured Lenovo ThinkPad T490 and T14 G1 laptops. In addition, the organisation chose remanufactured laptops in place of purchasing new devices. To support wider adoption IT team continues to build on this approach and is actively exploring sustainable IT options across other end user devices
Technical excellence:
The laptops were rigorously tested to ensure compatibility with Windows 11 Professional. The remanufactured laptops demonstrated an RMA of just 3%, instilling confidence in their performance and durability.
Cost-effectiveness:
RaaS model offered a cost-efficient alternative to traditional laptop procurement. By extending the lifecycle of IT equipment, Hoyer achieved cost savings without compromising on quality or performance.
Comprehensive support:
Hoyer VMS Group was provided end-to-end support, from initial discussions to implementation. Detailed performance comparisons and technical analyses were shared to address any concerns and ensure a smooth transition.
Alignment with operational goals:
The solution met all of Hoyer VMS Group’s operational requirements, including warranty coverage and performance standards. The remanufactured devices seamlessly integrated into Hoyer’s existing IT infrastructure, ensuring minimal disruption.
“By integrating sustainability into IT operations, we've proven that cost efficiency and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, delivering impactful results without compromising performance.”
