Zero Waste Week: Rethinking Sustainable IT and Tackling Waste

The excitement of a new device, the promise of faster speeds and sleeker designs, easily overshadows the fate of the old one. But the old one doesn’t just disappear. This September marks Zero Waste Week, a time to reflect on the waste we generate and how we can reduce it. While many of us are getting better at recycling household plastics and food scraps, the conversation around electronic waste is still too quiet, despite it being the world’s fastest growing waste stream. The constant cycle of consumerism, the drive for the ‘new’ every year, has created a problem of obsolescence and waste that we can no longer afford to ignore. We owe it to ourselves, and to the generations that will follow, to confront the ugly truth behind our disposable tech culture. Doing a little better isn’t enough anymore. It’s time to go beyond.
The Staggering Scale of Global E-Waste
The numbers are difficult to comprehend. In 2022 alone, the world generated a staggering 62 million tonnes of e-waste. To put that into perspective, that’s enough to fill 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks, which, if lined up bumper to bumper, would circle the entire equator. According to the UN’s Global E-waste Monitor, this problem is growing five times faster than our documented recycling efforts can keep up. It’s a crisis escalating right under our noses, fuelled by our consumption habits.
What is e-waste, exactly? It’s any discarded product with a plug or a battery. This includes everything from your fridge and microwave to your laptop and smartphone. These devices contain a cocktail of valuable resources and toxic substances. When they are not disposed of properly, precious materials like gold, copper, and rare earth elements are lost forever, while hazardous materials like mercury can leach into our environment, damaging ecosystems and human health.
The situation in the UK is a stark reflection of this global issue. We generated over 24.9 million discarded mobile phones in a single year. The average household now owns around 25 electronic devices, with many lying unused in drawers and cupboards. A shocking 20% of these devices are hoarded instead of being repurposed. Worse still, only about 20% of our e-waste is properly recycled, and an estimated 500,000 tonnes are illegally exported each year, shifting the burden onto developing nations. This isn’t just an environmental problem; it’s an ethical one.
A Broken System: The Linear Model of ‘Take, Make, Dispose’
Our current approach to technology is fundamentally linear. We extract raw materials from the earth, manufacture products, use them for a relatively short period, and then discard them. This model is unsustainable. The production of a single new laptop, for example, requires an astonishing 190,000 litres of water. When you consider the millions of laptops produced each year, the strain on our planet’s finite resources becomes painfully clear.
This is where the conversation needs to shift from simple recycling to a more profound, systemic change. As on our podcast Sustainable IT: In Conversation – Episode 2 – Alexander Thiele, Senior Manager, Bechtle, points out, “I think it’s clear that CO₂ and Earth’s resources are correlated; it’s all about keeping products longer in the lifecycle. That means we’re decreasing the use of virgin materials while increasing the recycling rates on precious metals. Or said differently, we need to reuse, design out waste, and really make use of the resources embedded in old IT. Worldwide, from the numbers I’ve seen, only 20% of e-waste gets appropriately recycled. So there’s a lever we can pull here, and doing so will naturally lead to a higher use of remanufactured devices.”
